Jays look at closer situation

The Jays are said to be in the mix for the services of Kevin Gregg, who lost his job as the Cubs’ closer last year. He was sidelined by a rib injury which he tried to play through before being shut down last season.
The 6’6” 220 lb. righthander is an interesting free agent possibility and Toronto is said to be battling the Rockies for his services.
You have to like the fact that Gregg has registered 84 saves in his last three seasons, since becoming a closer with the Marlins in 2007. He is definitely a power pitcher who has also averaged a strikeout per inning during this stretch.
The move may come as a surprise when you know that Toronto has a couple of solid closer options in Jason Frasor, Scott Downs and Jeremy Accardo. The bottom line is the addition of a live arm like Gregg’s will simply add to the quality arms in the Jays’ pen.
In addition, it then frees up some of these other relievers for trade or an adjustment to their roles. We have heard, in the past that the Jays’ management could put Scott Downs back into the starting rotation and we have seen that Frasor has been sought by opposing teams as well.
This just looks like another smart and economical possibility, given the narrow field of suitors competing against the Blue Jays.
There is an old adage that also applies in this instance.
“You can never have too much pitching.”

My thoughts on the addition of Kevin Gregg and what it means for the Blue Jays in the ninth inning:
